Archidona’s past will surprise you, from the settlements in the caves of the rooks or its Andalusian past and its Baroque period, will allow you to discover the surprising heritage that the town treasures.
Archidona was the capital of the Cora-Rayya, equivalent to the province of Malaga at the time of Al-Andalus. Witnesses of this period can be found on the hill of Gracia, dominating the horizon are the walled enclosure, the remains of the citadel, the cistern and the mosque and sanctuary of the Patron Saint of Archidona.
A mosque dating from the 9th century, the only preserved mosque in the province of Malaga. We recommend the ascent on foot through the pine forest and do not miss the opportunity to contemplate the spectacular and incredible sunset, delighting in the view of the valley and the iconic Peña de los enamorados in the evening sunset.
Archidona has been declared a historic-artistic site. Preserving a heritage that has been preserved over time. With its characteristic urban fabric of white streets and alleyways, which at every step open up like viewpoints overlooking the fertile plain and the Peña de los Enamorados. It is dotted with historic buildings: churches, the Luis Barahona de Soto Institute, the Cilla, etc., as witnesses of its long history.
It is well worth a leisurely stroll to appreciate this cultural legacy and enjoy its squares as a place for meeting and socialising. Its emblematic Ochavada square, the first wonder of the province of Malaga, stands out.
